What’s with the value of technology?

So, for those that haven’t already heard, Sun bought MySQL yesterday. While I’m not that excited over it, as I don’t think Sun has produced anything innovative in quite awhile, what really gets me is the price they bought it for.

$1,000,000,000.00 dollars (1 billion dollars). While I’m by no means qualified to say if that is too low/high, what I don’t get is how a technology company that powers most of the internet is worth a fraction of the price of a crappy social networking site like Facebook (valued at $15,000,000,000.00). I know what something is valued at is not a representation of what it would sell for, but I couldn’t help but be a bit perplexed at how technology is valued these days. I guess it all comes down to how much money can you rake in!
